ViralHeat: Sophisticated Social Media Tracking on the Cheap

Quick Pitch: A social media monitoring service that opens the space to the masses by costing a fraction of the competition.

Genius Idea: Social media has become an integral tool for marketing teams, agencies, and brands as not just a platform for campaign distribution, but an important communication medium that needs to be monitored at all times. Omniture’s done a great job at creating premium add-ons, adding Twitter and Facebook application analytics for brands, but there’s still room for improvement.

Entering into the market at a much more affordable price point is ViralHeat, a social media analytics service that helps brands monitor 200 plus video sites, on top of Twitter tracking, and real-time search and monitoring for brand mentions across the web. All of which you can have direct and unlimited access to for about $10/mo.

As a ViralHeat user, you can create profiles. Profiles count against your subscription plan (you get 10 profiles for $10 and 50 profiles for $40), so choose wisely, but they can be created to track keywords, phrases, names, expressions, or anything else of your choosing. Standard search operators can be included, which means that you can ensure that your profiles are tracking exactly what you specify. During the setup process you can even opt to share data with team members by adding them to the daily email list, or share publicly with everyone (like these).

Once your profiles have been configured, ViralHeat will then aggregate information from across the web and give you a dashboard view of what’s happening across each profile. Of course you can drill down deeper into each profile to view a high level overview and specifics for each site. So for Twitter related data for your profile, you can view total mentions, mentions per day, daily average, total unique authors, most active Twitterer, count and percent of retweets, tweets with link, and even sentiment analysis.

For each profile, Viralheat also pulls in the web content with mentions and analyzes the websites being discussed in conjunction with each search term. If a website is being discussed in context, Viralheat will aggregate this data and show you the count of sites per week and day, hottest webpage, most active publisher, and additional data on the types of websites and their authors. Similar comprehensive data is available for online video and tracks mentions across 200 video sites. Essentially, this content composition analysis can give you a detailed perspective on what’s really being discussed and shared in relation to your brand mentions.

ViralHeat is an impressive social media analytics tool that is affordable for all businesses and brands, regardless of size. It goes beyond the functionality of free social media monitoring tools, offers premium services at more digestible prices, and provides even better context than existing paid tools on the market.
